At age 18, John D. Shields was single and working as a salesman in a drug store in Miami.[1]
He was working for the Coast Guard at Fort Lauderdale in 1935.[2]
He married Ruby L. Johnson 9 Jun 1938 in Broward County, Florida. At that time he was a resident of Charleston, S. C. His occupation was sailor.[3] He and Ruby were divorced in 1941.[4]
He married Bernice Mary Doherty 19 Dec 1941 in Broward County, Florida.[5]
He returned to the port of New Orleans from Trinidad 26 Nov 1943. He was born 5 Nov 1912 in Rockdale, Florida and was then residing at 3034 SW 7th, Miami. This is the same address at which his brother William F. Shields was residing during World War II.[6]
John and Bernice and daughter Carole, age 2, were living in Monroe County, Florida in 1945. John was a diesel mechanic with an 8th grade education.[7]
John married Velma Strucken 7 Sep 1948 in Miami.[8]They were divorced in 1952.[9]
John died in 1969. The wife buried with him is Susan N. Shields, 1914-1992.[10]
