Research Notes

According to John Edgar Shields, History of the Shields Family, p. 48: "Andrew Jackson Shields is known to have had two daughters, Cora and Ida, and a son, Craig. Ida was a teacher for some years in the elementary school in Gettysburg and enjoyed a reputation as a strict disciplinarian. Craig Shields' name appears in the records of Maryland volunteers who served in the Union Army in the Civil War; he is later listed as a member of the Emmitsburg Presbyterian Church." Craig Shields, however, is not a son of Andrew Jackson Shields. Craig Buchanan Shields b 24 Aug 1843 York Springs, Adams, PA, d. 31 May 1916 Gettysburg, Adams, PA Son of George Shields. [1]

Find A Grave has different parents for Andrew Jackson Shields: It says he was born in Emmitsburg, MD 7 Feb 1829 and died in Adams Co., PA--no explanation of why he was living in Illinois: "The son of Andrew Jackson & Susan (Cover) Shields, in 1860 he was a millwright living in Madison County, Illinois. He stood 5' 9" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Marine, Madison County, Illinois, July 30, 1861, and mustered into federal service at St. Louis, Missouri, August 7 as a private with Co. D, 59th Illinois Infantry. On August 1, 1863, he transferred to Co. G, 15th Veteran Reserve Corps, and honorably discharged at term's end August 6, 1864, at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois.

There may be more than one Andrew Jackson Shields, both married to wives named Susan. See, for example, the 1890 Veterans' Census for South Franklin Township, Adams, Pennsylvania. It is reported therein that Susan Shields was a widow and that Andrew J. Shields served as a private in G Company, 15th Pennsylvania Infantry, enlisted 27 Jul 1861 and discharged 6 Aug 1864.[2]

He married Susan Robinson October 21, 1866, in Boonsboro, Washington County, Maryland, and fathered Ida May (b. 11/15/67 - married a Biddle) and Sydney Isadore (b. 08/27/70). At his death, he was a resident of Orr Glen, Adams County, and Susan later lived in Franklin Township, Adams County." [3]

The LDS Pedigree Resource File, however, has Susan Cover as the wife, not the mother, of Andrew Jackson Shields. [4]

Jackson Shields is listed in Bond County, Illinois in the 1860 Census. age 29, born in Maryland, laborer, for miller Cyrus Ripson. [5]

1870 Census, Hamilton Township, Adams, PA: Shields, Jackson age 40 mill wright born MD; Susan Shields age 26 b PA; Harriet E. Shields age 5 b PA; Ida May Shields age 2 b MD. [6]

1880 Census, Liberty, Adams, Pennsylvania: Susan Shields is a widow living with daughters Hattie, Ida and Dora.
