Benjamin Shields was a son of John J. Shields and Mary Polly Saffarrans.He was born in Virginia in 1813. Benjamin migrated to Nashville, Tennessee, where he married Susan Armante Bowles. He and Susan had seven children before she died of consumption in 1849.
In 1853, Benjamin married Martha Ann March in Davidson County, Tennessee. [1][2] Martha was several decades Benjamin's junior, and only a few years older than Benjamin's oldest son Evan Shields. Martha and Benjamin had at least four children together.
