Evan Bowles Shields was born on March 12, 1836, in Tennessee, USA. He was the son of Benjamin Shields and Susan Bowles. Evan had at least three younger full siblings; eventually, he had many half-siblings.
Evan graduated from Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee in 1857, and was granted a license to practice law that same year. [1]
Following his schooling, he went home to Davidson County, Tennessee, where he lived in the Shields family home. His mother, Susan, had died in 1849, and his father, Benjamin, had remarried to Martha Ann March, who was only four years Evan's senior. Also living in the family home were Evan's grandparents, John Shields and Mary "Polly" Saffarans Shields. [2]
Evan entered the Confederate Army during the United States Civil War. He died while fighting in the U.S. Civil War battle known as the Battle of Mill Springs (also known as the Battle of Fishing Creek) on January 19, 1862. At the time of his death, he was a second lieutenant. Evan was buried in Zollicoffer Park Cemetery in Pulaski, Kentucky. [3]
