Biography

John Parker Shields was born in 1709 in Chester County, Pennsylvania, a son of William Shields (1668-1741) and Jeanette Parker, daughter of Thomas Parker. In 1730/33, John married Margaret Perry (b. 10-21-1710; d. aft. 1773), the daughter of Robert Perry, born in England February 2, 1676 and Leah Norris born February 10, 1679 in Wales. Margaret and John had at least five children. John passed away about 1772 in Augusta (Rockingham), Colony of Virginia.

Children of John P. and Margaret Shields:

  • John Shields 1735-1819
  • Thomas Shields 1737-1781
  • William Shields
  • Mary Shields
  • Robert Shields b. 7-4-1744; d, 1-18-1802; m. Nancy Stockton [parents of ‘the Ten Brothers’]

Research Notes

“John Shields, the grandfather of the ‘ten brothers,’ around whom this sketch centers very largely, purchased 225 acres of land from Beverly Manor in 1742. His will was filed January 23, 1772, in which he is called a free-holder. It mentions his wife, Margaret (we do not know her maiden name but have reason to believe that it was Perry) and sons John, Thomas and Robert, and a daughter Mary. Robert was the father of the ‘ten brothers.’ He was married in 1761 to Nancy Stockton.[1]

Shields-1648 and Shields-540 appear to represent the same person because: same spouse, child, year and places of birth and death. I believe this should be named John Robert.
