Biography

- William T. "Uncle Billie" Shields was the son of Reuben and Mary (Moore) Shields. He was born in Kent Co., DE. Ca 1783 they moved to Stokes Co., NC.

- By 1801 William was living in Stokes Co., NC when he married Rebecca Robertson. They had eight children all born in Stokes Co., NC. Three of these children migrated to Bartholomew Co., IN and a fourth to Pettis Co., MO.

- Rebecca died 25 Feb 1825

- 30 Nov 1825 William was married the second time to Sarah (Pitts) Haines and they had two daughters.

- Taken from the family history read at the Shields Reunion - 19 Aug 1911, held at Bunker Hill Church near Kernersville, NC. -- William Shields, better known as "Uncle Billie" lived where Mrs. Della Beeson now lives. He married Rebecca Robertson. His sons were John Shields, who lived 1/2 mile south of this place where Mrs. Robertson now lives, and was the father of Mrs. T. C. Starbuck and the grandfather of John R. Stewart and others. Abel Shields, of Indiana, was the father of Harper Lindsay Shields. William Shields who went West and was the father of Jade Shields, Grace Jones and others. Samuel Shields who was the father of Grundy and Josephine of Columbus, Indiana. Elisha Shields married Leah Davis and built the house that stands now on the Grandfather Reuben Shields farm. Andy Shields was the father of Thomas Shields and the grandfather of Edw. A. Holton and Charles Holton. Elizabeth and Sarah were his daughters by his first wife. Elizabeth married Thomas Rich and has no children, but raised several orphan children. Sarah was the second wife of Henry Stafford and the mother of a large family of children.

After the death of "Uncle Billie's" first wife he married a widow Hanes who had two daughters, Hannah who married Zadock Stafford and Elizabeth who married Levi Stafford; there were later born to them two daughters. Eliza and Amanda. Eliza married Joseph Idol and Amanda married Moses Hastings and is the only one of the grandchildren of Reuben Shields still living.

- William T. Shields died intestate in Forsyth Co., NC. His son John Shields handled the settlement of his estate. A listing of his children was not included in his estate papers. He was listed as W. T. Shields, dec. in two places within the documents.
