Robert Taylor Shields was born about 1847 in Georgia, United States, son of Robert Shields (1819 - <1880) and Lucy Ann Freeman (~1815 - ).

In the 1850 census the family lives in Houston, Georgia. ^[1]

In the 1860 census, father Robert (age 41) is a Teacher living in Volusia, Florida with the family. He doesn't own real estate but lists himself with $3500 personal estate. The neighbors are the Hulls and Wickwires. The Wickwires are wealthy he may be teaching their children.^[2]

• Adults are the guardian of this child.

In the 1870 census, the family remains in Volusia, Florida. The famly fortune has reversed after the war, he does own real estate but $3500 from 1860 has reduced to $350. Did he invest in confederate money? Their ward, Mary remains with them. There are two black children working as Farm Laborers for them.^[3]

In the 1880 census, the family remains in Volusia, Florida. The father died since the last census. Robert is now the head of house.^[4]

In the 1910 census Robert (age 62) was the single uncle of Emory Alexander in Lakeland, Polk, Florida. His sister Nancy lives there as well.^[5]
