Obituary
Obituary in the death of Richard Loftus Shier at his home in Sunderland on Oct. 30, 1916 the Township of Brock is minus another of its few remaining pioneers. The late Mr. Shier was born at Lot 4, Conc. 5, Brock on the 16th of April 1831, being the fourth son of the late Richard and Catherine Shier who came from Ireland about 1822. They took up land and made a home for their family near Odelltown, Montreal but remained there just eight years, when they left Quebec and settled on the farm in Brock where the son Loftice was born. Both parents lived to ripe ages, viz: about four score and 2 years. When the late Richard Loftice Shier became a man he married Miss Mary Ann Speiran on the 27th February, 1866. They settled on part of lot 5 on the 6th concession of Brock , where a large family of children were raised, viz: Richard J. of Toronto; George D. of Uxbridge; Julius H. of Vroomanton; Mrs. Robt. Murray of Zephyr; Mrs. R.C.Hoskin of Toronto; Mrs. W.C. Francis, Cannington and one son deceased. In 1913 the parents moved to Sunderland, retiring from active life and from the farm where they had long and faithfully toiled. and raised a family which long since had grown up and "called them blessed". Only one brother, George, survives, and to him is given the credit of carrying much of the early history to Brock in his well trained memory. Be it said of Loftice Shier, he was a good father, and a lonely home is left. It must be so, these tender human ties cannot be severed without a pang. Yet in such a death there is really no cause for grief. His life's work was done, and well done. Wearied with life's cares, weary of suffering, he lay down to rest. The funeral was largely attended and was conducted by Rev. H.E. Wellwood of the Methodist church, assisted by Rev. W.G. Aldridge. Internment took place at St.John Cemetery.
