John was born in 1930 in Perth, Western Australia.[1] He is the son of John Shimmon and Elizabeth Stockden.

TOWNSEND-SHIMMON: The engagement is announced of Marie, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Townsend, 7 Thomas-street, Mosman Park, to John, second son of Mrs. and the late Mr. J. Shimmon, 9 Mofflin-avenue, Claremont.[2]
He married (Ruth) Marie Townsend in 1953 in Perth[3] and they had three children.
