Biography

He was the son of Benjamin Shinn and Ann Reese.[1]

"Samuel Shinn was born in New Jersey, and in early manhood moved to Virginia, He had the same experiences as his brother Isaac, and lived a hardy frontier life, He settled on Ten-Mile Creek in Harrison County, and in 1785 married Sarah Davidson."[2]

Samuel wrote his will on 14 February 1831.[3]

In his will he gave the land that he was living on to his daughters Hannah Wilkerson and Elizabeth Ogden.
To his wife, Sarah, he gave her one third of his estate, both real and personal.
Son Isaac Shinn, daughter Sarah Morris, and son Francis Shinn, five dollars each.
Friend Caleb Boggess to be Executor.

Josiah Shinn's 1903 publication named the children of Samuel Shinn and Sarah Davidson as:[2]

  1. Sarah Shinn, b. 1786
  2. Francis Marion Shinn, b. 9/29/1788; m, Eliza, daughter of John Robinson.
  3. Hannah Shinn, b. 1790; m. John Wilkinson, ob. sine poli.
  4. Elizabeth Shinn, b. 1792; m. William R. Ogden,
  5. Restore Shinn, b. 1794; moved West.
  6. Isaac Shinn, b/ 1/30/1793; m. (1)Sarah Robinson; (2) Maria Shinn.
