Biography

Samuel Shipley was born in 1859 and his birth was registered in 1859 J Quarter in Leicester. Mother's maiden surname was Gibson. From the subsequent marriage record, we know his father was Joseph Shipley, a fruit merchant. ^[1]

His parents, Joseph Shipley and Alice Gibson were married on 20th October 1856 in Leicester, Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom. ^[2]

In 1861, Sam Shipley (age 1, born in Leicester) was in the household of his father, Joseph Shipley (26, a general dealer, born in Smeeton, Leicestershire) and mother, Alice Shipley (24, born in Leicester), in Carley Street, Leicester St Margaret, Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom ^[3]

Hennery Bishop and Elizabeth Shipley were witnesses. Charles J Cooper conducted the marriage. Samuel Shipley signed his name and his bride made her mark. ^[5]

On the 1891 Census, Samuel Shipley (32, head, married, fruiterer born in Leicester) and his wife, Elizabeth Shipley (28, born in Leicester) were living at 116 Wharf Street, Leicester, with their children, Ernest Shipley (1, born in Leicester) and Nelly Shipley (3 months, born in Leicester). His sister-in-law, Ada Garner (19, fruiterer's assistant born in Leicester) was also in the household. ^[8]

Samuel Shipley (widower age 48 years, a fruit merchant) of 186 London Road, son of Joseph Shipley (fruit merchant, deceased) married Ada White (spinster age 37 years) of Nurseries Upingham Road, daughter of Joseph White (labourer, deceased) on 2nd June 1908 by licence at Saint Barnabas Church, Leicester. Samuel White, Annie Drinkwater and E? Charles were witnesses. Arnold E W Manvell conducted the marriage. ^[12][13]

In 1911, Samuel Shipley (52, head, married, a fruit merchant born in Leicester) and Ada Shipley (wife, age 40, born in Northamptonshire) were living in Leicester, Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom along with a 1 year old son, Clifford Shipley (born in Leicester). Samuel's son, Ernest James Shipley (21, fruit salesman born in Leicester) was also in the household, as well as two servants and a visitor. ^[14][15][16]
