Caution: No Connection between Abraham Lincoln and the Shipleys
James Hanks and his wife Lucy Shipley have in the past been believed to be the parents of Nancy Hanks, wife of Thomas Lincoln, and Abraham Lincoln's mother. DNA tests have now proven that such a relationship is impossible and Abraham Lincoln has no Shipley ancestry.
Robert Shipley, son of Adam Shipley I and his wife Lois, was born in Anne Arundel County about 1678 and died between 1761 and 1763. Some sources have his birthdate as July 1, 1678. Also
He was baptized in St. Anne's Church, Annapolis, Anne Arundel Co.
About 1710, he married Elizabeth Stevens. She was the daughter of Charles Stevens of Dorchester County. With his brothers he moved into the portion of northern Anne Arundel County which became Howard County.
The birthdates of his children are found in the records of Christ Church, Queen Caroline Parish, where he was one of the first vestrymen. The portion of Anne Arundel County in which Queen Caroline Parish is located became Howard County when that County was formed in 1861. The church is today Christ Episcopal Church, Columbia, Howard County, Maryland.
↑ In some sources, her middle name is given as "Keturah."
Shipleys of Maryland. The Shipleys of Maryland, 2002. Three Volumes. A Study of the Descendants of Adam Shipley of Yorkshire, England, Who Came to Annapolis, Maryland, in 1668. Baltimore, MD: Gateway Press, 2002.
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Robert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share DNA with Robert:
Shipley-226 and Shipley-125 do not represent the same person because: Richard and Robert Shipley are 2 different people and brothers not the same person, see Richard's wife profile for further information
Does anyone know who the Shipley and Broglin are that dna tested on FTDNA? How are they related? Between 2 of my maternal line that have tested they match 22 Shipleys on a Y DNA test. I'm trying to find a tree for the one that has only 1 degree of separation (Broglin/Shipley) from my ancestor? HELP ; )
