Was one of the petitioners to the Convention of Maryland to form an independent rifle company in July 1776. He took the Oath of Allegiance before Hon. John Dorsey on March 12, 1778. Commissioned as Ensign in Captain Brice Howard's Company on My 15, 1776, and served in Capt. John Worthington Dorsey's Company in the Elk Ridge Battalion in 1778. In March 1779, he was commissioned a First Lieutenant in Capt. Vachel Stevens' Company.
