Jonathon Shipley was born about 1714, son of Jonathon Shipley 1676 - 1719 and Martha Davies 1688 - 1757. His brother was portrait painter William Shipley 1714 - 1803.
His mother was the daughter of William Davies 1658 - 1726 who was granted copyhold of Twyford House in Winchester in the early 18th century. The property was then taken over bu her brother William Daives 1658 - 1764 and Jonathan inherited the property after William's death.
He attended St John's College Oxford receiving a BA 1735, MA 1738 and DD in 1748.
He was Dean of Winchester from 1760 to 1769, Bishop of Llandaff from January to September 1769 and Bishop of St Asaph from September 1769 until his death.
He became a close friend on Benjamin Franklin and Franklin stayed at Twyford House a few times including in 1771 when he started his biography while staying there.
Jonathan Shipley married Anna Maria Mordaunt, daughter of George Mordaunt.
Rev Jonathan Shipley passed away in 1788, aged 74 years. He is buried in St Mary Churchyard, Twyford.
