Biography

Olivia Shipman, also called Olive, was born in Ontario about the 16th of June, 1839 in Upper Canada. She was the daughter of Daniel David Shipman and Elizabeth (Gates) Shipman.

In the 1851 Census Olivia was with her parents and was one of eight children in Oxford, Grenville County, Canada West. She would be 14 on her next birthday. Also in the household was Olive's Grandmother, Margaret Shipman.[1]

Olivia married John Hilliard (Hillyard) about 1860 to 1861. No source for the exact date has been found, however in the 1861 Census they were recorded as married and were living with Olivia's parents on their farm in Oxford, Grenville County, Ontario. There were no children of John and Olive's listed on the 1861 Census .[2]

The census in 1871 showed Olive and John were farming on their own. They had moved to the Brunel and Franklin Township area in Muskoka, Ontario. There were two children listed in the household. The Cock family was listed on the census page just above the Hillyard family. Olives son, Albert, would eventually marry Anna Margaret Cock.[3]

Olive and John continued to farm their land in the Brunel area for many years. The 1881 census refers to the area as the Brunel and Stephenson district in Muskoka, Ontario. In the census there were four children in the household, the oldest child Albert was helping his father with the farm.[4]

Children;

  • Albert James Hillyard b. 7 Feb 1866 m. Anna Margaret Cock
  • David William Hillyard b. 16 Jan 1870
  • Hurland John Hillyard b. 14 Jun 1873 m. Hazel Aveline Ditty
  • Caroline Hillyard b. 1 Jun 1876 m. William John Mckay

By 1891 Olive was widowed but still farming in the Brunel area. The 1891 census describes the area as the Eastern Townships of Brunel and Stephenson in the district of Muskoka and Parry Sound. There were only three children in the home, as her son Albert had married and started a family of his own. Olive's two sons, Hurland and David, helped their mother with the farm.[5][6]

Olivia passed away on the 11th of April 1909 in Brunel, Muskoka, Ontario, Canada. She was 68 years old. Her residence was given as Lot 16 Con 10. Olivia was a Widow and had been ill for some time. Her fathers name was given as William Shipman in error as her fathers name was Daniel David Shipman. The registration of the death was done by her son H. J. Hillyard ( Hurland James Hillyard) on April 12, 1909.[7]

Shipman-862 and Shipman-204 appear to represent the same person because: Same basic information, same spouse. Documentation exists for differing birth year.

Another Olive, Olive C Shipman, born the same year, married Wm Coleman, so this must be the same one; and she was living with/next to her father in 1881.
