Records

Sandy Run

In North Carolina, between the 1770s and the 1790s, Daniel Shipman (presumably Sarah's father, appears in records owning land along Sandy Run.

Sandy Run is a creek that branches from Broad River at approx. 35.23°, -81.7°. This location was located in several counties as the county map of North Carolina evolved. The location was in Bladen County until 1750, in Anson County until 1762, in Mecklenburg County until 1768, in Tryon County until 1779, in Rutherford County until 1841. Since 1841 the location has been in Cleveland County.

Daniel Shipman is listed in the 1782 tax list in Rutherford County, North Carolina.[1]

Indices of deeds for grantees and grantors in Rutherford County, North Carolina, show Daniel Shipman, Sr., Daniel Shipman, Jr., and Jacob Shipman owning land in Rutherford County in the 1790s. A 1799 deed between Daniel Shipman, Sr., and Daniel Shipman, Jr., shows a transaction of land on Sandy Run.

Thomas Harrington's Will

Thomas Harrington's will appears in Rutherford County, North Carolina.[2] The will is dated 1789 and leaves the bulk of his estate to wife Sarah Harrington. Daniel Shipman, Sr., and Jacob Shipman were executors.

Daniel Shipman's Will

Sarah Harrington is mentioned as the daughter of Daniel Shipman in his November 1798 will.[3] The will was recorded in Warren County, Kentucky.

The will begins with the following text:

Be it remembered that on the Eight Day of November one thousand seven hundred and ninety eight that DANIEL SHIPMAN, senior, Dec'd as he lay sick on his bed though in his perfect mind and memory not having an opportunity of a written will made and appointed this his perfect will in the Distribution of his Property Viz:
Item one, Negro man named Dick and one Negro woman named Beck with two geldings called Dick and [?] with twenty pounds due to the above named Daniel Shipman from one of his daughters which said twenty pounds to be and remain in her hands until a division of the above mentioned is brought to an equal division between his oldest children to wit: Sarah Harrinton, Edward Shipman, the heir of Jacob Shipman, Anna Lee, Daniel Shipman, Lucrecey Gage, who owes the above twenty pounds, Feeby Crawford, Rebecca Siscoe and Mary Johnson.

Betsy Harrington Marriage Record

A marriage bond dated 22 January 1798 in Warren County, Kentucky, shows the marriage of Betsy "Arrington" (presumably the daughter of Thomas Harrington and Sarah Shipman) and Thomas Bond. Thomas Harrington (presumably a son of Thomas Harrington and Sarah Shipman) was a surety.[4]

Jacob Harrington Marriage Record

A marriage record dated 19 May 1800 in Warren County, Kentucky, shows the marriage of Jacob Harrington (presumably the son of Thomas Harrington and Sarah Shipman) and Betsy Potter, daughter of Thomas Potter. Daniel Shipman was a surety.[5]

Mary Harrington Marriage Record

A marriage bond dated 2 July 1804 shows that John Cate and Mary Harrington (presumably the daughter of Thomas Harrington and Sarah Shipman) were married in Warren County, Kentucky.[6] Jacob Harrington was a surety.

Know all men by these presents that we John Cate and Jacob Harrington are held and firmly bound unto his excellency James Gerard esquire governor of the state of Kentucky in the penalty of £50 which payment well and truely to be made to said governor or his successors we bind ourselves and each of our heirs [?] jointly and severally firmly by these presents sealed this 2nd day of July 1804.
The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there has a license issued for a marriage shortly intended to be solemnized between the above bound John Cate and Mary Harrington
Now should there be no lawful cause to obstruct said marriage then the above obligation to be void else to remain in full force and virtue

Jacob Harrington Deed

Jacob Harrington, perhaps the son of Thomas Harrington and Sarah Shipman, appears in an 1817 deed in Warren County, regarding land on the waters of Sinking Creek.[7] Sinking Creek lies in the eastern portion of Warren County. See approx. 37.01°, -86.15°.

Migration to Missouri

Many online genealogies assert that Sarah Shipman married Thomas Harrington and had children, many of whom migrated from North Carolina through Kentucky and Tennessee to western Missouri. More research is needed to provide sources for this information.

The following was copied and pasted from this webpage — https://www.genealogy.com/ftm/e/i/s/Molly-B-Eisenberg/GENE4-0002.html — apparently the research of Molly B. Eisenberg on genealogy.com. The webpage provides no sources but indicates a migration of the family from North Carolina to Tennessee to Western Missouri, which fits some evidence from original sources. More research is needed.

I think that the profile of the South Carolina Thomas - Harrington-8166 - is not Sarah's husband. If no objection, I'll detach him ... but one of the two profiles for a son Thomas might be Sarah's by the NC Thomas Harrington... see

Thomas Harrington & Thomas Harrington. Please take a look.

update - merge completed ... forgot to include information dropped from Shipman-2455 in merge for lack of support:
  • middle name "Catherine"
  • born 1745 in South Carolina
  • married 1762 (to 1793) in South Carolina
  • died 1793 in Franklin, Georgia

Shipman-2455 and Shipman-255 appear to represent the same person because: duplicate profiles for wife of Thomas Harrington
