John Shipp was born in Appalachia, in Kentucky.

John was born in 1824. He is the son of Wyatt Shipp and Mary Chandler.^[1]

He married Caroline Mardis probably sometime in 1851 or early 1852 since their first child was born in December 1852.. They resided in Hart County when the 1860 census was enumerated.^[2]

They were the parents of at least 7 children:
