Biography

Meredith Shurley taught school in a log cabin in the 1840s in the Gold Hill area of Fort Mill township. It was said he required as strict obedience of the adults as he did of the children he taught. His primary textbooks were the Blueback Speller and Pike's Arithmetic. In 1860 Meredith Shurley (b c 1790) was living as a member of the Ware household and was listed in the U.S. Census as a teacher, aged 70 years. The Shirley Association.[[1]]

Meredith was born about 1790. He was the son of Thaddeus Shirley and Elizabeth Clawson. He passed away about 1863.

1830 Census.
1840 Census. I believe this is the Meredith Shirley who was still living in York, South Carolina. Note: His name is spelled Merideth Sherley on this Census.

In that article it says “His [Leitner Shurley’s] grandfather, Meredith Shurley, was still alive [when Leitner was 14 and his father died] and living in Florida.”
