According to the 1850 Census, Philamon was born in 1791 in South Carolina.

Philemon Shurley married Lucretia Walston November 5, 1812, and their oldest daughter, Malinda, was born the following August. Her nickname was Linda. She had seven brothers and sisters. Her brother, Absalom, born in 1818, moved his family to Giles, Tennessee, around 1845, where he built a large plantation with over 30 slaves. In 1859, he moved to Walker County, Alabama, and died there in 1898. Linda’s other brother, Eli Washington, died in York County in 1857. Her sisters’ names were Lucinda, Lucretia, Barbara, Elvira, and Emeline. [[1]]

1820 Census. I believe this is the Philamon Shirley living in York, York South Carolina. He was 29 at the time.[1]
1830 Census. I believe this is the Philamon Shirley living in York, South Carolina. He was 39 at the time.[2]
1840 Census. I believe this is the Philemon Shirley still living in York, South Carolina. He was 49 at the time.[3]
1850 Census. Philemon Shirley, age 59, was living at home with his spouse, Lucretia, two of their children: Delilah and Washington and what appears to be Lucretia's sister, Drusilla Wallston. There is also a Samuel Lynn living with them, age 17. They are living in York, York, South Carolina. He was 59 at the time and Lucretia was 56. This record shows he was born in 1791 in South Carolina.

Probated nov 3, 1846: oldest son Meredith, $10; 2nd son Philemon Shurley, $10; oldest daughter, Ruth Wright, $10; 2nd daughter, Elizabeth Wherry, $10; 3rd dau, Nancy Quick, $10; 4th daughter, Frances Perry, $10; James Shurley $10; all other to youngest son Eli Clawson Shurley, executor. C. L. Clawson furnished coffin, $10; Dr. Jacob Clawson, medical bill, $66.25. A. Brown, tombstone, $12.65.

Notes

Philemon Shurley died in September of 1854, at the age of 64. When he willed Malinda her share of his estate, he specified that the money would be hers, and would “be free from the interference of, or control of her husband, Levi Locke”. [[3]]
