Frank Alvin (F.A.) Shirley of Pt. Neches, Texas, died peacefully Friday, March 9, at the Veteran's Hospital, Houston, Texas, after a brief illness.
F.A. was born November 1, 1918, in Greenbier, Texas, near Gatesville, Texas, to Joel Benjamin Shirley and Alice Lamb Shirley. He was the second of four children.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Helen, and brothers, Moxie and Benjamin.
He is survived by his sister, Leta Trietsch, who lives in Temecula, California, in addition to three sons, seven grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.
F.A. lived on a farm until high school graduation. He was a high school athlete. He married in 1940 and served in the US Army Air Corps in WW II. He was employed by Atlantic Richfield in Port Arthur until he retired in the mid-70's. He and Helen moved to Pt. Neches in 1940 where he resided until his death. The Shirleys were members of First Baptist Church, Pt. Neches.
He is survived by his sons, Richard Carroll and wife, Linda, of Newport, NC, Jerry Wayne and wife, Nancy, of San Diego, CA, and Ronnie Lee and wife Carol Beth, of Pearland, TX. Grandchildren, Donna Fite, Jim Shirley, Matthew Shirley, Andrew Shirley, Jonathan Shirley, Karen Stanley, and Mary Shirley. Great-grandchildren, Andrea Fite, Brooke Shirley, Olivia Shirley, Jamie Shirley, Stephen Shirley, Austin Shirley, Tyler Shirley, Lauren Shirley, Violet Shirley, Isa Shirley, Aiden Shirley, and Logan Shirley.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2012 at First Baptist Church in Port Neches, Rev. Dr. David Mahfouz officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches. A gathering of family and friends will be held Thursday, March 15, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Agape Room at First Baptist Church in Port Neches. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Melancon's Funeral Home in Nederland.
