Lucy Shore was born in 1851 in Brierley Hill, Staffordshire. She was the daughter of James Truman Shore and Fanny Matthews.[1]
In 1861, Lucy was 9 years old and working as a nailor. She lived with her parents, James (age 44) and Fanny (age 35); her older siblings Thomas (age 13) and Sarah Ann (age 11); and her younger siblings Samuel Henry (age 8), Emma (age 6), Mary Ann (age 4), Phebe (age 2), and Martha Elizabeth (age 1).[2] James worked as a castings dresser, and Thomas was a laborer. Sarah worked as a nailor as well. Samuel, Emma, Mary Ann, and Phebe were all scholars.
In 1871, Lucy's family had moved to Middlesbrough, Yorkshire from Brierley Hill. She was 19 years old and working as a housemaid at Cottage Hospital.[3]
In 1881, Lucy was 29 years old, though the census reads 33 years old. She was living with her father James, and her younger siblings Isaac (age 15) and Mary Ann (illegible age, but likely 24), and Mary Ann's children James (age 2 months) and Elizabeth (age 11 months).[4] James worked as a laborer, and Isaac was a laborer doing iron work.
In 1884, Lucy married Thomas Monkman on April 15th in Middlesbrough. [5]Thomas was listed as a laborer, and they both lived at 16 Black Street. She and Thomas were listed as 32 and 27 years old, respectively. Neither were literate.
In 1891, Lucy was 39 years old. She and the other members of the family are listed as children and grandchildren without either of Lucy's parents present; James has been deceased and Fanny was visiting in Staffordshire. Lucy was a widow living with her brother Isaac (age 24), and her children Fanny Mary (age 5), Lucy (age 3), James (age 7 months) and Elizabeth (age 7).[6] Isaac worked as a rivetter and caulker, while Fanny, Lucy and Elizabeth all were scholars.
In 1901, Lucy was 49 years old. She lived with her mother Fanny (age 75), and her children Lucy (age 13) and James (age 10).[7] Lucy worked as a monthly sick nurse.
In 1902, Lucy died in Middlesbrough district, Yorkshire. She was 51 years old.[8]
