Biography

Orra Shorey was born in 1825 on the family farm northeast of Napanee, Lennox County, daughter of Miles Shorey and Sarah Switzer. In 1845 she married John W. Peterson. They farmed in Fredericksburgh Township, then (1852) at Madoc (Hastings County) and by 1853 in Newburgh, Lennox County. In 1857 they bought a farm north of Newburgh in Camden Township. They had four children. In 1865 they moved to Mount Pleasant Township, Wabasha County, Minnesota, and thereafter to West Albany Township, Wabasha County, and finally to McCook County, Dakota Territory. John died there in 1884. Orra returned to Ontario and lived with her daughter Anna Maria Vanderwater and family in Kingston. Orra died in 1897 in Toronto and is buried in a family plot on the farm where she grew up.

Note

The Miles Shorey farm was the northernmost in North Fredericksburgh Township (= Third Town).
