Biography

Nancy Short was born in 1800. She was the daughter of Aaron Short and Elizabeth Chaffin.

Nancy married George Sparks on August 7, 1822, in Lawrence County, Kentucky. George was a widower with a young daughter. It was a second marriage for George and a first for Nancy.

The 1850 U.S. Census for Lawrence County, Kentucky, finds the following household: George Sparks, age 54, male, farmer, real estate valued at $700, born NC; Nancy Sparks, age 50, female, born VA, cannot read/write; Cynthia Sparks, age 22, female, born KY, cannot read/write; Levi Sparks, age 16, male, farming, born KY; Emiabella Sparks, age 11, female, born KY; Caleb Sparks, age 8, male, born KY; Mary Sparks, age 6, female, born KY; Nancy Hucherson, age 23, female, born KY; James F. Hucherson, age 1 month, male, born KY. This family is surrounded by Sparks relations. *It should be noted that the '5' on this census looks suspiciously like a '3'; read carefully.

The 1860 U.S. Census for Carter County, Kentucky, finds the following household: George Sparks, age 65, male, farmer, real estate valued at $1000, personal property valued at $300, born NC; Nancy Sparks, age 60, female, housekeeper, born VA; Cyntha Sparks, age 33, female, born KY; Emmazilla Sparks, age 21, female, born KY; Mary Sparks, age 16, female, born KY; Thos. Colwell, age 8, male, born KY. *It is doubtful that Thomas is the son of Nancy Short Sparks; he is more likely her grandson. More research is needed.
