William was born about 1781.
Birth date & place derived from census data.
The 1841 census recorded five persons in a particular house in Ivinghoe: William Short (60), Allis Short (55), Rebecca Short (20), Samuel Short (10) and Jane Dolimore (5). In the next dwelling were: William Dolimore (25), Harriett Dolimore (30) amd Matilda Dolimore (4). The 1841 census did not indicate relationships or record precise places of birth, and the ages of persons over 15 were rounded down to the nearest five years (often inaccurately).
The following presumptions arise: (1) that William and Allis Short were man and wife, and Rebecca & Samuel were their children; and (2) that there was a familial link between the two families.
The second preumption was confirmed by the 1851 census, which showed Jane Dollimore [sic] (15) and Matilda Dollimore [sic] (14) as nieces of Rebekah [sic] Short (38). The clear inference is that Harriett Dolimore was the older sister of Rebekah Short.
