Biography

Harriett is the preferred spelling in the facsimile (handwritten) reproductions of census returns. Dolimore is the spelling of her husband's surname in the majority of such census returns. She was born in 1809, the daughter of William Short and Alice Janes. She was christened 24 September 1809 at Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire, England. Harriett married William Dolimore 25 Dec 1833 at Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire. and they had 5 children:

Jane Dollimore 1835–Deceased • M93F-JFL

Matilda Dollimore 1837–Deceased • L2DQ-G71

Naomi Dollimore 1844–1927 • L28T-WGK

Samuel Dollimore 1847–Deceased • L2D3-G33

Birth date estimated from 1841 census data. Marriage date estimated from date of birth of eldest child. Date of death based on 1851 census data, where her husband is described as a widower.

Harriett's birth surname and parentage are deduced from the following data: For the night of the 1841 census, Harriett's eldest daughter Jane Dolimore (5) stayed in a neighbouring house in Ivinghoe with the Short family [William Short (60), Allis Short (55), Rebecca Short (20) and Samuel Short (10)], while Matilda Dolimore (4), Harriett's second daughter, was at home with Harriett and William Dolimore. For the night of the 1851 census Harriett's two elder daughters, Jane and Matilda are recorded as being with their aunt, Rebekah Short, in Ivinghoe. Ergo: Harriett was Rebecca's elder sister.

Harriett was living in Ivinghoe for the 1841 census, but her two younger children were born in Marsworth, indicating that the family moved there before 1845.
