First appears in records of Pittsylvania Co, VA, in 1775 when he was living with his uncle William. Early in the next year, 1776, he enlisted as a Pvt. in Capt. Peter Dunn's company belonging to Col. Hendrick's Virginia Regiment. He was present for the battles of Brandywine and Germantown before being discharged 28 Mar 1778. It was soon thereafter that he married his 1st wife, Luella. In 1782, he bought 32 ac. of land on north bank of the Banister River in Pittsylvania Co from his brother Joel; he paid £1,000 in what clearly must have been relatively worthless money of the period. On 5 Aug 1795 he sold this land and moved to Green Co, KY, near Muldraugh's Hill, where he was living in 1818 when he began to receive his pension from the Revolutionary War. It was in Green Co that he married his 2nd wife, Parthenia Jones, about 1799 or as late as 9 Jan 1828. In 1848 when Taylor Co was formed from Green Co, he was living near Campbellsville which became the new county seat. There he was one of the 12 founding members of the Good Hope Baptist Church. Between Sep 1835 and Apr 1836, he and some of his family moved on to Sangamon Co, IL, where he may have acquired land as early as 1827, although a county history states that he arrived in Oct 1825 and settled on Spring Creek, 6 miles west of Springfield. On 22 Aug 1836, his will was written for him by Abraham Lincoln. But between the writing of his will and his death, Joshua was one of the elderly men who participated in a political parade at Springfield in 1840 in support of the Whig candidate for President, William Henry Harrison; the "aged men" (Jake was 88) rode in a canoe mounted on wheels and rigged like a ship. Joshua died in Menard Co, IL, less than 4 months later, sometime before 9 Feb 1841, when his will was probated.
