Biography

Eliza Susan Shorter, daughter of William Shorter & Lydia, was born about 1826. She was baptized on 20 April 1832 in Strood, Kent.[1]

In the 1841 census Eliza (age 15) was in Milton Gravesend, Kent.[2] She lived with her parents and four siblings.

In the 1851 census Elizth (age 25) was the daughter of Wm Shorter in Milton next Gravesend, Kent.[3] She lived with her parents and seven siblings.

Eliza married Enos James Baldwin on 16 April 1854 in Holy Trinity, Milton-next-Gravesend, Kent.[4] Their children were:

  1. George Frederick Baldwin (1857 - )
  2. James Edward Baldwin (1859 - 1907)
  3. Alfred John Baldwin (1864 - 1930)
  4. Eliza Baldwin (1870 - )

In the 1861 census Eliza (age 34) was the wife of Enos J Baldwin in Chatham, Kent.[5] They had two children: George and James, Eliza's sister Jessie Shorter (age 15) also lived with them.

In the 1871 census Eliza (age 45) was the wife of Enos J Baldwin in Chatham, Kent.[6] They had four children: George, James, Alfred, and Eliza.

In the 1881 census Eliza (age 52) was the wife of Enos Baldwin at 38 Saunders St, Chatham, Kent.[7] They lived with their children Alfred and Eliza.

In the 1891 census Eliza (age 61) was the wife of Enos J Baldwin in Chatham, Chatham, Kent.[8] They lived with their adult children James, Alfred, and Eliza.

In the 1901 census Eliza (age 72) was in Chatham, Kent.[9] She lived with her adult children James, Alfred, and Eliza.

In the 1911 census Eliza (age 85) was the widowed head of household at 8 Purbeck Road, Chatham, Chatham.[10] She lived with her children Alfred and Eliza.

Eliza was mentioned on a memorial in Chatham Maidstone Road Cemetery, Chatham, Medway Unitary Authority, Kent with a death date of 29 Jan 1916:[11]

In Loving Memory of Enos James Baldwin died 18th March 1896 aged 67 years also James Edward Baldwin died 31st May 1907 aged 48 years also Eliza Susan wife of the above Enos James Baldwin died 29th January 1916 aged 90 years also Alfred John Baldwin died 18th February 1930, aged 66 years. Reunited.

Eliza's death (age 90) was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1916 in the Medway district.[12]
