Biography

Ida was born in New Jersey in 1848. She was the daughter of John Howard Shourds and Margaret B. Leek. Ida was caregiver to Mary Flagler, the wife of wealthy industrialist Henry Flagler, until Mary’s in 1881. In 1883 Ida married Henry Morrison Flagler to become his second wife. They did not have any children together. In 1889 Ida was declared legally insane and incompetent and committed to an asylum. In 1891 Henry divorced her, setting up a two million dollar trust fund that left Ida comfortable and well cared for. She resided in an institution in Central Valley New York until she passed away in 1930 at age 82.
