Biography

  • "Benjamin Shreve, (II)); b. About 1781, Alexandria, Virginia; d. 1827, Alexandria; m. 1st Susanna Muse, about 1802; 2nd, Barbara Swink, about 1808."[1]
  • BENJAMIN SHREVE, (II), Son of Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Shreve and Myra Trout. Born about 1781, in or near Alexandria, Va. He was married twice. His first wife was Susannah Muse, whom he married about 1802. They had one child, a daughter, who was very young when her mother died. He married his second wife, Barbara Ann Swink, about 1808. She was a daughter of John William and Mary (Klein) Swink of "Mandelay", in Fairfax County, Va., and a granddaughter of Hans Michael Swinck. The latter and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Swinck, with other members of their family embarked from Rotterdam, Holland, on the vessel "Jamaica Galley". bound for Philadelphia, February 9, 1739.

Benjamin lived near Alexandria, Va., and owned considerable property in that city at the time of his death, which occurred in 1827. His surviving wife, Barbara, died in 1862. (This writer has searched old records and visited many old cemeteries in and near Alexandria, but has been unable to find any trace of the graves of Benjamin, or either of his wives.) [2]

  • 1810 U.S. Census: Benjamin Shreve lived in Richmond, Northumberland County, Virginia with one male 26-44 (Benjamin, 29), two females under age 10 (Susannah, 7, and Julia Ann, newborn), one female 26-44 (Barbara, 27). No slaves. [4]
  • 1820 U.S. Census: Benj'n Shreve lived in Alexandria, Alexandria County, District of Columbia, with one male under 10 (Benjamin F., 1), one male 26 - 43 (Benjamin, 39), one female under 10, one female 10-16, one female 16-26, one female 26-45 (Barbara, 37). Two persons worked in agriculture. Benjamin kept slaves: one male under 14, one male 14-26, one female under 14. [5]
  • 1827: Benjamin Shreve died. No death record found.
