Biography

Bessie VanGilder of Fairmont formerly of Buffalo Road Mannington passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2016.

She was born July 29, 1915 on Grassy Run Road, Fairmont, the daughter of the late Thomas and Sarah Vincent Shreve. She is survived by one sister, Blanche Shreve Collins, one brother-in-law Henry VanGilder and one sister-in-law, Genevieve McClure VanGilder and several nieces and nephews, all of whom loved her very much; she was special to all those who knew her.

Bessie originally grew up near Rock Lake during the time it became a lake; in fact, family property was purchased as part of the lake project. She married Thomas "Jack" VanGilder, April 19, 1941.

She and her husband moved to Dent's Run, Mannington in the mid 40's. In 1952 they started VanGilder' s Dairy and delivered milk products door-to-door in Mannington for several years. They moved to Buffalo Road in 1957. Later, she worked at Decorator Industries for ten years.

Bessie attended Calvary Baptist Church in Mannington for many years. She currently attended Victory Baptist Church in Fairmont.

She lived on Buffalo Road until 2012, when she and her two cats moved to Fairmont with her niece.

Bessie enjoyed her pets and farm animals, gardening and farming. She did not mind the hard work, considering it just a natural part of life. She took care of her mother until her death in 1958, and her husband until his death in 1991. She had no children of her own; but, loved her nieces and nephews very much.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, a brother and five sisters; as well as several in-laws.

Friends and Family may call at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street Fairmont. The Funeral Service will be at 11:30 am on Monday, April 11, 2016 at the funeral home with Pastor Cary P. Grant officiating. She will be buried beside her husband at Grandview Memorial Gardens on East Grafton Road, Fairmont.
