The Shultz Family of Darke County, Ohio

The Biography of Mary Shultz Daughter of George Jacob Shultz and Elizabeth Creager by Francis D. Motschman, Sr.

Tue., July 1, 1834. For the seventh time there was hustling and bustling and a jubilance throughout the household of George and Elizabeth Shultz in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Their seventh child was born and they named her Mary. Unlike some of her sisters Mary was not one to procrastinate; by the time she was 19 she knew who she wanted to marry and when she was 20 she did it. She married William Fulton Hunter, Sr. on Thu., June 15, 1854.

When Mary was six years old she emigrated with her parents and siblings to the farm home of her Aunt in Warren County, Ohio near the town of Blue Ball. She and her family stayed there until she was 12 and she loved every minute of it. Work on the farm was spread out over so many people that there was an abundance of time for play and... sooo many children to play with. She remembered her time here with great fondness throughout the remainder of her life.

In 1846 the time was at hand for Mary and all her family and all their belongings to make the move to start their new home in Darke County, Ohio. There were tears galore as good byes were said between the two families and then the wagons started to move down the road headed North. The trip was exhausting and rough. They felt lucky when they were able to travel on a road, as many miles were driven on just trails. Some of the older children relieved their boredom by putting a scare into the smaller children by telling that they were sure they had just seen some Indians sliding in behind some nearby trees.

George and Elizabeth calmed the little ones down and then proceded to put a little scare into the older ones by telling them what would happen to them if they pulled a shenanigan like that again. The rest of the trip was pretty uneventful.

It took quite some time and a lot of hard work on everyones part for the new land to become a good working farm and home but it was finally finished and everyone was proud of their accomplishments.

By the time she was nineteen Mary had taken quite a shine to William Hunter, Jr. and he was enamored with her as well and they talked of marriage. William was born on Tue., April 26, 1831 in Greenville Twp., Darke County, Ohio to William Fulton Hunter, Sr. and Elizabeth (Betsy) Earhart, he was the sixth of their eight children. William Hunter, Sr. was one of the early settlers of Darke County, emigrating from Warren County in 1825.

William Fulton Hunter, Jr. and Mary Shultz had a total of nine children:

1. Thomas H. Hunter b. Mon., July 28, 1856 in Greenville Twp., Darke County, Ohio. He married Jennie Brown and he passed away on Thu., June 4, 1942. 2. Ada Hunter, their first daughter, b. 1859 in Greenville Twp., Darke County, Ohio. She died at the age of 18 on Sun., April 22, 1877. 3. Willim Sylvester Hunter b. 1861 in Darke County, Ohio 4. Charles Elmer Hunter b. on Tue., January 13, 1863 and died on Tue., May 26, 1931 5. Edmond A. Hunter b. 1867 in Darke County, Ohio 6. Mary E. Hunter b. 1868 in Darke County, Ohio 7. John I. Hunter b. 1870 in Darke County, Ohio 8. Prudence O. Hunter b. 1874 in Darke County, Ohio 9. David D. Hunter b. 1877

Additional Comments: We only know that Mary died sometime after 1880.
