Biography

William A Shultz was born in Pennsylvania about 1828. He married Sarah Walker about 1851 presumably in Pennsylvania.

Their first two children, Julia and John were born in Pennsylvania. The next two James and Alice were born in Illinois. Shortly after Alice's birth they relocated to Wisconsin.

In 1860 William Shultz had his family in Spring Grove, Green County, Wisconsin. At the time land was being offered for new settlers but mostly it was logged off land with more stumps than open ground. Most farmers left for better land. Wisconsin must not have suited him as they left for Iowa. In 1861, their son Nelson was born in Brandon, Buchanan, Iowa. He died a short time later. William and Sarah stayed in Iowa, having four more children there, Charles, Moses, George, and Hiram.

In 1882 William signed for the marriage of his daughter Alice. This is the last record we have of him. In 1895 Sarah is listed as a widow, living in Center, Mills Co, Iowa.

Research

Birth date location census record information only - unable to locate birth, marriage, or death record as location of all 3 are unknown.

Some have H F Schultz as father but no solid sources. William Schultz is too common a name to be certain. Linked census record: "1850 United States Federal Census", Ancestry.com, Online publication - Provo, UT, USA: MyFamily.com, Inc., 2005; Original data - United States of America, Bureau of the Census. Seventh Census of the United States, 1850. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 1850. Death date In 1882 William signed for the marriage of his daughter Alice. This is the last record we have of him. Searches of Waterloo and Independence have resulted in no death record or probate record. He died as mysteriously as he was born. In 1895 Sarah is listed as a widow, living in Center, Mills Co, Iowa. Her obituary does not match the source data so I suspect it came from a younger son who did not have the entire story.

  • Fact: Residence (1850) Woodward, Clinton, Pennsylvania
  • Fact: Residence (1860) Spring Grove, Green, Wisconsin, United States
  • Fact: Residence (1880) Jefferson, Buchanan, Iowa, United States
  • Response from State Historical Society of Iowa: "I checked Iowa death ledger, Vol. 275 (pp. 32-36) and did not see John Shultz listed. With regard to William A. Shultz, I would really need more information than just a year span to complete your request. So, here is a link from our website: history-research-researchcenters-researchrequests-independedresearchers-2022.pdf (iowa.gov). You might consider reaching out to someone from this list to help you with your research. Or you can pass this link onto the person/persons you are trying to help. Also, parents' names were not shown on Iowa death records until after July 1, 1904 when Iowa introduced the standard death certificates. Because John Shultz was not shown in the 1902 death volume it would be pointless to search county film."
  • Reached out to History Nebraska - Archives for Charles' death certificate to see if Charles' death certificate has parents' birth location as someplace more specific than PA. The response was: For genealogical use, per regulation 3-004.06 - the death must have occurred 50 years prior to your request. Call Vital Records at 402-471-2871.
