Cortes S. Shuman was the son of Albert James Shuman and Sarah Ann "Anna B." Wheeler Shuman. He was a
brother to Ernest Wheeler Shuman and adopted sister Rosa Shuman. He married Mayme F. Mulford 3-15-1902 in
Dearborn Co., IN; their son was Lovell S. Shuman.
"Cortes S. Shuman, son of Albert J. and Anna Shuman, was born in Chesterville, Dearborn county, Ind., April 6th,
1882. While yet a small boy he moved with his parents to Ripley county, where he has spent the greater part of his
brief, but active life. He was married to Mayme Mulford, March 15th, 1902. To them was born one child, Lovel now
thirteen years old. Three years ago he united with the M.E. church at Green Chapel under the ministry of Rev. T. J.
Hart. He early offered his service to the church, took upon himself his Christian obligations and was filling the office
of church trustee at the time of his death. The church will feel keenly the loss of this brother. He was a member of
the order of Knights of Pythias at Elrod, and was, in the estimation of his brothers, deemed a real knight and was
held in the highest regard by them all. He loved his order and contributed much toward its success. Up until some
months ago Mr. Shuman had enjoyed the best of health and in all appearance embraced every element of physical
strength. Last December it was discovered that he was a victim of sarcoma. The most skilled physicians were
employed, every known remedy of medical science was administered and the tenderest and most loving nursing
was given him, but to no avail and on May 19th, 1916 he submitted to the Angel of death, aged 34 years, 1 month
and 13 days. What he suffered he and God only knows. Forty days and nights he was in the Good Samaritan and
Jewish hospitals, six weeks under the care of a specialist and several weeks in the hands of his home physician.
Yet he bore his suffering patiently, and with a surprising amount of cheerfulness. He leaves to mourn his untimely
departure, his wife, one son, father and mother, one brother, a number of other relatives and a host of friends. He
will long be remembered as an industrious and progressive farmer, an obliging neighbor, a loving husband and
father and as a young man of the highest type of moral principles and clean in all his habits of life. It is very hard
for us to understand the justice of all things, but we have no disposition to question the wisdom of God and believe
Him when He says, 'all things work together for good to them that love the Lord.' And our brother had the feeling
like Paul, that his affliction worketh for him. 'A far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.' He left his testimony
with Pastor and loved ones that in his affliction he had prayed much, that he had the confidence that his Savior
had spoken peace to his soul and was ready to receive him when the time came. 'Dangers stand thick through all
the ground, To push us to the tomb; And fierce diseases wait around To hurry mortals home.' "
