Biography

According to her baptism record, Hannah Sidey was born in 1828 in Perthshire, Scotland. She was the daughter of Peter Sidey and Janet Ford.[1], but according to her tombstone inscription, she was born 21 June 1829. Either the gravestone date or the transcription of her baptism was off a year.
Hannah emigrated to Canada West (Ontario) with her parents, three older brothers and sister Mary. In the 1842 census [2], the family was living on Lot 16 Conc 6, Hamilton Twp [3] She married James Johnston 1848 and in the 1861 census, they were still in Hamilton Twp.[4] Then for the 1871 census they were living in Stanhope Twp, Peterborough County[5] (now in Haliburton County, and north of Carnarvon) [6], with children: John, Margaret, Matthew, Ellen (Eleanor), Mary Jane, William, Susanna, Hannah, Robert H, and Eliza Isabella. Eliza died age 4 and there is another daughter Jemima Elizabeth buried with her in 12 Mile Lake Cemetery, Minden Hills, and just south of Carnarvon. By the 1891 census, the family is enumerated in the town of Peterborough [7], where James died 18 August 1894.[8]
In 1897, Hannah, along with her widowed daughter, Susannah Lobb, and her two sons, William and Wilbert, moved to North Dakota. In 1900 they are with her son Robert H Johnston in St. Joseph Township, Pembina, North Dakota.[9] She died 17 February 1910, and was buried in Hyde Park Cemetery, Neche, Pembina County, North Dakota[10]
