Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Lorenzy Siggers is a part of US Black heritage.

Lorenzy was born around 1847 in Mississippi [1][2][3][4].

In the 1850 Mississippi Slave Schedule a 3 year old male slave of William Segar is listed.[5].

As William Segar died in 1852, he would probably have lived with someone else in 1860 - possibly Williams wife Catherine. According to family stories, the mother of Lorenzy would have been the then twelve-year old Daph, a slave of Dr. William Segar, who was raped by Andrew Levi Alexander, the neighbours' son [6]. This is supported by the fact that Lorenza is mulatto, according to the 1880 census[2], but currently, there is no direct evidence.

He married to his wife Evaline around 1869, and had several kids: Robert (~1870), Henrietta (~1872), Montgomery (~1874), Marshal (~1876), Hays (~1877), Oscar (~1880), Samuel (1886), Cleveland (~1887), William (~1889) and Nora (~1893) [2][3].

In 1885, the Enumeration Of Educable Children in Attala County, Mississippi, Lorenzo Segur is listed as the father for Robert (~1871), Henrietta (~1873), Montgomery (~1875), Hay (~1877), and Oscar (~1878) [7]

In the 1920 census we find he lives with his son Cleveland and he could not read or write. His age is listed as 61, which would make him 10 years younger than in the 1900 and 1910 census [8]. In 1923 Lorenzy is mentioned in the death record of his son Samuel, but it is not known whether he was alive at the time [9]

"The story of how the Siggers came about. Robert Alexander was born in South Carolina and relocated to Attala county, Mississippi. He lived next door to Dr. William Segur. His son Andrew Levi Alexander raped Dr. William Segur's slave who's name was Daph and only 12 years old. She gave birth to our forefather Lorenzie Siggers in the year 1848. There was no records of any other siblings being born. Lorenzie was the only child from his mother Daph. Lorenzie's father as you may know is white. Lorenzie had half brothers and sisters from his father Andrew. Lorenzie married Evaline S. Byrd and had Robert, Henrietta, Nora, Cleveland, Samuel, Oscar, William, Hays, Marshall and Montgomery Siggers. Proof is in my DNA, my mom [.. ..] and great aunty [.. ..] and a host of cousins Who are all descendants of Lorenzie Siggers. "
