Biography

Julius Alexander Sigmon was born in Catawba County, North Carolina in July of 1842 to Barnett & Martha Ann Linebarger-Sigmon (Find A Grave)

In 1862, there was a record of Julius A. Sigmon (age 19) military service in the Civil War in the 32nd Infantry for the State of North Carolina.

He married Camilla Rebecca Fisher. They farmed and raised eight children. [1] Camilla (born 1845) died in 1889.

According to Find A Grave, Julius was married three times. His second wife, Laura R. Helderman, died in 1897 and his third wife, Pauline B. Payne (born in 1860), died in 1944.

In the 1870 census, Julius "Sigman" was married to "Cumilla Sigman" and they had one child, William Sigman, age 1 year. Julius was a "farmer" and Camilla was keeping house.

On September 17, 1912, daughter Minnie Sigmon (daughter of Julius and Rebecca Sigmon) married Robert S. Arndt (son of Noah and Mary Arndt). The bride was 28 years old and the groom was 30. The marriage took place in Catawba Township, Catawba, North Carolina.

Notes

I am following Julius A. Sigmon, father of Laura T.C. Sigmon. I believe that Laura, aka L. Docia Sigmon Edwards, was my great-grandmother.

According to the 1900 census, Docia was living in the home of her father, Julius. Docia was 26 year old; Julius was a 58 year-old widower. Occupation was listed as farmer. Children in the household were: (1) M.Luther Sigmon, (age 28, b. April, 1872), also a farmer (2) Laura T.C (T for Theodocia?, age 26, born February, 1874); (3) James P.A. Sigmon (age 19, born February of 1881, occupation listed as farm laborer); (4) Minnie S. E. Sigmon (age 17, born February 1883); (5) Samuel F. C. Sigmon (age 16, born November, 1884); (6) Eva A. R. Sigmon (age 11, born October, 1889), and) (7 John F. Sigmon (age 5, born March, 1895).

One more child to find: Emily A. Sigmon Ashbury (born in 1876 - died Feb. 20, 1932). May have been married and gone by the 1900 census.

Death records of the children indicate the mother's name as Camelia Fischer or Rebecca Fisher. The names and birth years of the children are consistent with the children listed above, so I'm fairly certain Camilla and Rebecca are the same person.

Aha! I found the death record for a "Laura Dacia Edwards" - born 1874, died December 23, 1939. The dates match great-grandma Docie. Father is "Jull Sigmon" and mother is "Rebeca Fisher". Burial at "Smerner" (Smyrna?) - also agrees with the location of L. Docia Sigmon Edwards's grave.

There is another Julius Sigmon of Catawba, North Carolina (born March of 1842). The 1910 census has him married to a Julia Sigmon for 41 years, so I am certain the two Juliuses are separate men. He is married to Julia in the 1900 census. No children are listed for either census. [This Julius Alexander Sigmon (24 May 1842-15 September 1911), was the son of David Sigmon. Spouse: Juliann Sophia Reece. Note added by Kathy Gunter Sullivan, 24 September 2022.]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Julius by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Julius:
