Biography

Agaline (Sigman) Smith lived in Appalachia, in North Carolina. See Appalachia Project.

Agaline was born 13 September 1811 in Lincoln County, North Carolina, and died 4 January 1877 in Catawba County, North Carolina.

Tombstone inscription:
Agline Smith
wife of
Frederick Smith
was born
Sept 13, 1811
and died

Aged 67 yrs 3 mos and
21 days
Our Father and Mother [balance illegible in tombstone image][1]

A 1987-1988 canvas of the cemetery reported Agaline's age inscription as "65y 3m 21d."[2] Deducting Agaline's inscribed birth date from her inscribed death date indicates she would have been age 65 years, 3 months and 24 days at death. She was age 59 on the 1870 census, supporting she was age 65 at death. Agaline's 1840-1870 census enumerations consistently support an 1811 birth year.
