Biography

Zion Lutheran Church Records, Lincoln County, North Carolina: To Isreal Sigmon and his wife, a daughter Elizabeth Emaline born 17 November 1839, baptized 2 May 1841.

Elizabeth Sigmon, age 9 [born circa 1841], enumerated in the 1850 census household of Israel Sigmon.[1] Elizabeth E. Sigmon, age 17 [born circa 1843], enumerated in the 1860 census household of Israel Sigmon.[2]

Spouse: Dempsey F. Coker
Married after the 1860 census.

The following 1880 transcript was used by the Dawes Commission for verification of citizenship in the Cherokee Nation for purposes of allotment of land. Notations made by the Dawes Commission include Dawes enrollment card numbers, Dawes denied card numbers. The notation “DEAD” stamped beside the names of individuals was added later for those who were deceased at the time of enrollment for land allotment.

23 October 1900, Josephine A. Fults, age 24, residing at Chouteau, Cooweescoowee District, made application for enrollment of her mother Elizabeth E. Coker in the Five Civilized Tribes. The application was approved. Josephine's affidavit states her mother Elizabeth E. Coker, white, age 60, widow of Dempsey F. Coker (Cherokee by blood), resides with Josephine. [The application has space for naming children but it was left blank.][7]

Mrs. E. E. Coker, age 81, died Tuesday, 8 August 1922 in Tiawah at her son's home. She was the mother of Mrs. E. F. Fults [Josephine] of Pryor. Burial at Claremore.

Elizabeth E. Coker's 1910 census reports her as having birthed five children with four still alive in 1910.

  1. Possible child of Elizabeth: Martha Ella Coker born circa 1865. She was in Dempsey Coker's 1880 census household. She received bequests in her father's 1881 will. Her 1900 Cherokee Roll listing states Mattie E. Foster, wife of Samuel C. Foster, is age 35; Father Dempsey Coker; Mother [blank].[9] Her 1900 U.S. Census listing shows her born July 1865 in Arkansas.[10]
  2. David N. Coker born February 1869. He was in his parents' 1880 census household, born circa 1868. His Dawes card shows him as Dawes Roll No. 11459. David N. Coker age 32. 1/32 Cherokee. Enrolled 1880. Father: D.F. Coker dead. Mother Elizabeth Coker.[11] His 1900 U.S. Census reports him as born February 1869 in Arkansas.[12]
  3. John R. Coker born about 1870-1871. He was in his parents’ 1880 census household, born circa 1870. His 1900 census reports him as born August 1869 [sic] in Arkansas. Father born Arkansas. Mother born North Carolina.[13]
  4. Cynthia J. Coker was in her parents' 1880 household, born circa 1872. Her 1900 Dawes Census Card reports her as age 28, born circa 1872. Father Dempsy Coker, dead. Mother: Elizabeth E. Coker.[14] Her 1900 U.S. Census reports her as born April 1871 in Arkansas.[15] Her death certificate states she was born 9 April 1874 in Arkansas. The informant was Mrs. J. E. Suttle.[16]
  5. Josephine A. Coker was in her parents' 1880 household, born circa 1876. She is named as "my youngest child" in Dempsey F. Coker's 1881 will.[17] 23 October 1900, Josephine A. Fults, age 24 [born circa 1876], of Chouteau, Cooweescowee District, daughter of Dempsey F. Coker, deceased, and Elizabeth E. Coker his wife, applied for enrollment in the Five Civilized Tribes in behalf of herself, her husband Elmer Fults, and her daughter Dorothy. She supplied her marriage application dated 18 December 1885. The application was approved.[18]
