Joseph Walpole Silk, born on 20 August 1815 in Dublin, Ireland[1][2]. He may have been the son of Patrick and Mary Silk, but this has yet to be confirmed by Research & Sourcing.
Joseph was an errand boy who was arrested for House Robbery and sentenced, at the Dublin Courts, Dublin, Ireland on 18 December 1829, to be transported for 7 years. He sailed out of Ireland on 3 July 1830 arriving in New South Wales, Australia aboard the ship "Hercules", on 31 October 1830[3]. He was given his Ticket of Leave on 30 April 1835 and his Certificate of Freedom on 4 April 1839 while he was living in Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia.
He married Maria Thompson on 12 March 1841 in Bungonia, Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia[4][5]and their children were Joseph Walpole Silk, William Henry Silk, Mary Anne Silk, Maria Constance Silk, Owen Eugene Silk, Margaret Silk, Charles Silk, Thomas Wilfred Silk, Augustus Brophy Silk, Matilda Silk and Josephine Silk.
Joseph was drowned on 18 July 1864, in the Bibbenluke River at Monaro, Bombala, New South Wales, Australia[6][7]and was buried at the Eden Cemetery, Eden, New South Wales, Australia[8].
