Biography

James was born about 1747 in Edgmont Township, Chester County (now part of Delaware County), Pennsylvania. He was most likely the son of Joseph Sill and Martha Elliot.

James married Lydia Register about 1770 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.[1] They were the parents of seven known children, most of them born in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Their children were:

  1. Register Sill, b. 1771, m. Anna Hollis 29 Mar 1803, d. 1854 in Washington Co, IN;
  2. Adam Sill, b. 1775, m. Ann Huss 26 Mar 1796, d. 21 May 1821 in Shelby Co, KY;
  3. Martha Sill, b. 1779, m. Aaron Long 15 Aug 1796, d. 11 Mar 1854 in Shelby Co, KY;
  4. Mary Sill, b. 1780, m. Richard Huss 8 Oct 1798, d. 1856 in Shelby Co, KY;
  5. James Sill, b. 8 Apr 1787, m. Lavina Wright 4 Feb 1812, m. Elizabeth Hudson 31 Jul 1819, d. 11 Oct 1846 in Owen Co, IN;
  6. Abraham, b. 1788, m. Elizabeth Randall 23 Dec 1809, d. 9 Jan 1861 in Sullivan Co, IN; and
  7. John A, b. abt. 1795 in Shelby Co, KY, m. Lucinda Payne 18 Jul 1816.

By 1790, James had moved his family to Shelby County, Kentucky, where his son Adam and daughters Martha and Mary were married.

By 1800, James and his remaining family returned to Edgmont Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, after the death of his uncle James Sill Jr (1798) and his uncle-in-law John Holston (1796). James Sill was listed in the 1800 census for Edgmont Township enumerating 2 males age 0-10 (son John, 5; unknown son), 3 males age 11-16 (son James 13; son Abraham, 12; cousin William, 13), 2 males age 17-26 (cousin James, 22; unknown son), 1 male age 27-45 (son Register, 29), 1 male age 45+ (James, 53), 1 female age 27-45 [17-26] (cousin James' wife Sarah), 1 female age 45+ (wife Lydia). Cousins William Sill (George's son) and Aaron Sill (James' son) were listed next to James Sill on same census page.[2]

James was named as a trustee in John Holston's will, dated 11 March 1795, recorded 11 May 1796.[3] James helped divide up the estate between John Holston's three oldest sons in a deed recorded 27 February 1800.[4]

By 1803, James and his family had returned to Shelby County, Kentucky, where his oldest son Register was married.

James died in 1808 in Shelby County, Kentucky.

Research Notes

James Sill, born about 1747 in Edgmont Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, and died about 1808 in Shelby County, Kentucky, was not the son of James Sill Jr (Sill-373) as some researchers have suggested. James Sill Jr (Sill-373) was the youngest son of James Sill Sr and Ann Baker, born about 1743-1745. His sons Aaron (b. 1776) and James (b. 1778) inherited the estate in Edgmont Township in 1798 and lived in Edgmont Township their entire lives.
