Newton Edward Sills was the son of Edward Sills and Lydia Willams. He was born on 15 Jan 1844 in Florida . In 1850, age 9 (sic) he was living in Ware County, GA. with his parents and siblings: James age 14, Mildred age 12, and William, age 10. I have not been able to locate the family in 1860.

On Dec. 29, 1862, Newton enlisted into Company D, 9th Florida Infantry, in Jasper, FL, and served until he was discharged at the close of the War at Richmond, VA. According to his military records he was 5' 7", brown eyes, dark skin, dark hair. After the War, Newton returned to Ware County where he married, farmed, and reared a family. Newton married Samantha Grace Warren on May 7, 1874 in Ware County. She was the daughter of John Benjamin Warren of South Carolina.

In 1880 the family was living at Waresboro in Ware County, GA. with 2 children. ( We do not have the 1890 census and I have not been able to locate the family as of yet in the 1900 Census. ) In 1910 Newton and Samantha were living in Blackshear in Pierce County with 5 children, the oldest Ellen having left home.

Newton Sills died on June 24, 1913 after a brief stay in the Milledgeville State Hospital. He is buried in an unmarked grave on the grounds of the hospital. " Family lore says Newt was kicked in the head by a mule, suffering damage, causing him to be declared a lunatic and sent to Milledgeville"

On Nov 14, 2009 a ceremony was held at Jordan Methodist Church cemetery to dedicate the Veteran's Marker which was placed next to the grave of his wife Samantha.
