Manuel was the owner of an emporium, named Temple of Fashion and it was located at 519 Fort Street, Honolulu, Hawaii.

Next door to that store he also was proprietor of a saloon, and we are currently trying to prove that he is the same as Manuel Silva Esq, owner of Bay Horse Saloon.

  • Immigration Year: 1882 (on 1910 census)
  • Immigration Year: 1892 (on 1900 census)

According to his grandaughter Betty:

He was born in Sao Miguel, Portugal, not sure of the date, and he left there a young man and went to Honolulu. Our Grandmother [Mary Brilhante] was his maid in Portugal or worked for the family there as they were quite wealthy. Anyway, when he left Portugal for Honolulu, he took our Grandmother with him, so that is how she came to Hawaii. After awhile, Uncle Mac [Manuel G. Silva, Jr.] was born [1901] and then my Dad [Jacob Silva] was second, all in Hawaii. I don't know if Marilyn has spoken to you about our suspicions, but we are both, including Violet and Gloria, are almost positive that your Dad [Anterio Martin] was also a Silva. Grandma [Mary Brilhante] had only one true love and that was Manuel G. Silva, Sr. our Grandfather.

While in Hawaii, our Grandpa Silva opened a milinary store [an emporium, it was Temple of Fashion and it was located at 519 Fort Street, Honolulu, Hawaii, and was next door to a saloon he also owned] and was very sucessful, he never did marry our Grandmother [Mary Brilhante], instead he married a very rich Hawaiian woman [Rose Lokelani Guerrero] and had two or three sons by her. I know one was named Jesse [probably Jacinto "Jack"] but not sure of the others, wish I did know as I would look them up, after all they are relatives.

Don't know when Grandpa Silva died, but I do know that he wanted to send my Dad and Uncle Mac to a boarding school back East , as he had a lot of money, but Grandma [Mary Brilhante Martin] wouldn't hear of it, she used to get really angry when my Dad and Uncle Mac would sneek over to their fathers store to visit. One story my Dad [Jacob Silva] told me was one day their Dad gave them each a $5.00 gold piece and in those days that was a lot of money. When they got home they showed it to Grandma [Mary Brilhante Martin] and she took the gold pieces and threw them out in the back yard which was overgrown, they never did find the pieces, but she wanted them to have nothing to do with him as he had hurt her.
