Notes

Note H86Florence Looney dated Jake Silverman for years. Jake was a local sports book-maker and a colorful Elmira, New York character. Jake is buried under the name of MYER JACOB SILVERMAN, PVT. U.S. ARMY, WW I, born August 8, 1893, died March 25, 1978. Jake is buried in the Jewish section of St. Peter's and St. Paul's Cemetery, Elmira, New York. Buried in the family plot with Jake is ABRAHAM SILVERMAN, PVT. U.S. ARMY, WWI, born December 26, 1891 and died January 30, 1987, and ADA SILVERMAN born July 4, 1900 and died April 27, 1989.
My first recollection of Florence was when I would go to visit her and her sister with my mother. They resided on the fourth floor of a county owned rental property on the southwest corner of Williams Street and East Church Street in Elmira, New York. She continued to see Jake Silverman until her death in 1978. Jake passed away the following year. Just prior to her death, she came in contact with a woman who befriended her and started doing various favors for Florence, such as taking her to the grocery story and the doctor's office. Unfortunately, Florence was getting up in years and was getting forgetful. This woman took advantage of her, and took many of Florence's belongings, as well as some of Jake Silverman's gambling proceeds. The Elmira Police Department conducted an investigation and recovered some of Florence's cut glass and jewelry, but no one will ever know for sure how much this woman stole from Florence. Florence was put into a nursing home after that, and died a short time later. The woman could not be charged with any crimes because Florence's memory was so unreliable at that time. Florence's sister Frances had died in 1971, and Florence was living alone when she was prayed upon by this woman.
Myer Jacob Silverman, commonly called Jake, was not married to Florence Looney, but was carried here as a common law spouse because of the long-term relationship he had with Florence. Florence was Roman Catholic and Jake was Jewish, so this probably prevented them from marrying.
