My name at birth was Pamela Sue Silverman. My biological mother gave me my given name-and the family I was adopted by kept it that because my birth mother had named me.

I was relinquished by my birth mother due to circumstances beyond her control. I was told she wanted to keep me but was not allowed to.

She loved my father very much and the navy chaplain had even came to talk with them.

My name was changed to Pamela Sue Engelbart. I was adopted by Keith and Helen Grace (YORK) Engelbart. My parents had heard about me from my adopted mother's sister-Sister Mary James. She called and said that there was a baby here (NE) that was going to be put up for adoption. My parents traveled to NE and adopted me.

I was always told I was adopted-I used to tell the other kids, "Your mom got stuck with you-I was chosen." I guess it felt that way for a while. I always wondered about my mother and would ask my mom if my mother thought of me. She always replied, "Why of course she does."

As I grew older-and further understood what it meant to be relinquished I didn't feel chosen-I felt unloved and unwanted. It was easy to say that she did the best she could for me-but that did not stop the unloved/unwanted feelings.

I never really thought about my father when I was young-I guess girls favor there mother.

In March of 1992 I had the opportunity to search and locate my birth mother. I traveled to NE to begin the quest and within 2 days we were off to Cleveland, OH to look some more.

Finding her current name and address in her father's probate file I was able to contact her.

She was rather shocked by my call-but when I started sharing information with her about my birth she realized that it had to be her "PAMELA SUE" calling!!

The next day I met her and other members of the family. I have three half-brother. I was her only girl!!

Since then we have talk and shared lots of times...she shared with me my father's name and this summer (1994) I was able to go and met my dad's sister Marilyn at the PAYNE/GLEASON family reunion in Guide Rock, NE.

I feel very lucky to have been so warmly accepted by all member of my birth family-truly a long overdue meeting.......

Hi Pamela!

Thank you for adding a GEDCOM. The GEDCOM does not automatically populate your tree. It generates a GEDCOMpare report which you work through, either accepting or rejecting all suggested matches. Once that has been done, you should see [add] buttons for each of the remaining names.

The GEDCOMpare process guide has tips on how to use the data in your file most efficiently.

For those using Chrome or Opera browsers, there is a tool that can help with the formatting of profiles which have been created through GEDCOM, so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.

If you have any questions about how WikiTree works, log into WikiTree and go to your profile. Use the ‘Reply’ link below my comment. Alternatively, click my name to visit my profile. From there, you can leave a comment, or send a private message.

Have fun

It is best to start with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.

Thank you for adding your DNA to WikiTree. Getting the Best from DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.

Happy tree climbing
