Biography

John was born in 1828 in Greene County, Pennsylvania. In 1849 he moved with his father to Mercer County, Pennsylvania.[1] He was a Mennonite and in 1853 married Catherine Bixler (born 1835, died 1898). Children listed for John in Mercer County were David B., Michael, and Nicholas Johnson. By 1860 John was occupied as a sawyer.[2] However, John and Catherine were alleged to have possibly had this marriage annulled because they were cousins and marriage with this degree of consanguinity was against Mennonite norms.[3] He later married Catherine Culp (Kolb) of Pennsylvania. In 1870 he resided in Paint Township, Holmes County, Ohio where John and his wife raised most of their family.[4] Further children included Mima Catherine, Ruth J., Adda, and Addah Pricilla. He and Catherine moved to Christian County, Illinois about 1878 and he raised broom corn there, establishing a broom shop where he resided in Locust Township on Main Street in Owaneco, Illinois.[5] John died after a lingering illness combined with the "complication of diseases resultant upon old age." After their deaths, John and his spouse were both buried in Mound Chapel Cemetery in Taylorville Township of Christian County.[6],[7],[8],[9],[10]

Research Notes

The Family Search profile for John lists a death date of 7 May 1879. However, this is probably incorrect. An obituary for J. B. Silveus published in The Daily Breeze on Saturday, Apr. 30, 1904 establishes that he died Friday, April 29, 1904.[11]. There is another grave in the Mound Chapel Cemetery for a John Silveus born in 1827 and died in 1879,[12] but this profile assumes that this John would be a descendant of one of the brothers of David Silveus (Joseph or William). Although one source assigns Mary Isophene as a daughter of John Bourman Silveus,[13] the memorial profile for Mary Isophene (Silveus) Cowgill lists her as a daughter for John Silveus born 1827.[14]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
