Georges Simenon was a prolific Belgian writer, best known as the creator of the fictional detective Jules Maigret.
He was born on 12 or 13 February 1903 (his birth record states he was born on the 12th, half an hour before midnight; Simenon himself claimed that he was born a few minutes after midnight, on the 13th, but that his supertitious mother convinced his father to declare the baby born on the 12th[1]), at 26, rue Léopold, in Liège. He was the son of Désiré Joseph Hubert Simenon and Henriette Marie Élise Brüll[2].
