Biography

George Simkins was born in Illinois.

George was born in 1846 in Maquon in Knox County, Illinois, the son of George Washington Simkins and Annake (Weeden) Simkins (abt.1823-1847). His parents died when George was only eight months old, so George was taken in and brought by his paternal uncle (to confirm) Benonah 'Benoni' Simkins and his wife Sarah Ann née Rice. He grew up on their family farm in Maquon, and in 1862 he enlisted in the 83 Illinois Infantry and served until the end of the Civil War. Just after being demobilized in 1865, he married Drusilla Gabriel in Knox County. They moved to Marion County, Missouri to farm and where they had three children together. In the late 1870s, the couple separated and eventually divorced. In 1882, Druzilla remarried to George's adopted brother Benoni Myers Simkins, and George remarried to Lydia Bascom in Lincoln County, Nebraska. They settled to farm in Clearwater in Antelope County, Nebraska and had seven children together. His wife Lydia died in 1907. George married a third time to Mary Bentley née Burns (or Burrows?) in 1908 in Neligh in Antelope County. They did not have children. George retired from farming and in 1929 at the age of 82 he died in Neligh. He is buried with his second wife Lydia in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Neligh, Nebraska.

Children with Druzilla:

  1. Oscar, 1867-1867
  2. George Arthur, 1870-1957; m1. Edith, 1897, m2. Elizabeth, 1904, m3. Annie Bean, 1946
  3. Washington Irving, 1875-1958; m. Bessie Jane Patrick, c. 1894

Children with Lydia:

  1. Charles Henry, 1882-1960; m. Mabel Prosser, 1902
  2. John Burr, 1883-1981; m. Sylvia Leora Clark, 1910
  3. Frank Pierce, 1885-1976; m1. Gertruded 'Gertie' Mae Olds, 1907; m2. Isabelle Jones
  4. Oscar Lewis, 1887-1961; m. Gertrude 'Gertie' Mae Olds, 1913
  5. Effie May, 1890-1989 ; m. Eugene A. Blakesley, 1907

Obituary

The Neligh Leader, 11 Jan 1929. Clipping posted at an Ancestry family tree. Accessed 29 Jan 2019.

G. W. Simkins
G. W. Simkins died at his home in this city Tuesday, January 8, after an illness of some time, in fact, he had been in failing health for more than a year, but up to that time had been remarkably vigorous for one of his years. He was one of the few surviving veterans of the civil war in this community, there now being only five remaining. He was born at Maquon, Ill., March 10, 1846, and therefore lacked only a short time of being 83 years old. He enlisted in the union army of the civil war when a youth and served throughout the war. He was among the very earliest settlers in Antelope county, coming here shortly after the close of the war and went through with all the vicissitudes of the pioneer, including the grasshopper scourge of the early '70's. His homestead was in the Clearwater neighborhood where he resided for many years. He left the farm and has resided in Neligh for more than twenty years. He is survived by his widow and nine children as follows: George and Charles of Oregon, Frank and Carl of California, John and Oscar of Neligh, W. I. of Omaha, Mrs. Effie Blakely of Washington state, Mrs. Lulu Nutt of California. W. I. of Omaha was the only one of the children who lives at a distance able to attend the funeral, which is to be held from the Methodist church Friday at 2:30 p.m.

Research Notes

A note posted on cwconnelly Ancestry family tree explains the source of confusion about the role of George in the Benoni Simkins family: George Washington Simkins was born on March 10, 1846, in Magnon, Knox County, Illinois, and died January 8, 1929, in Neligh, Antelope County, Nebraska. He was orphaned at eight months of age, and was raised by and aunt and uncle Mr. and Mrs. Ben Simkins. He lived on a farm with them until he was 25 years old.
