Note N803Given her isolation in Victoria, and the failure of the hotel, that Caroline returned to Tasmania. She later married William Simmonds on 24 June 1869 in Hobart. Caroline was recorded as thirty-eight years old, thus making her year of birth as either 1830 or 1831, and William was aged fifty-six, givin him a birth year of either 1812 or 1813, and both were recorded as widowed. Caroline had already told a white lie about her age, as she gave her age as nineteen when she married Martin Casper, thus making her birth year about 1824/1825. Her second marriage to her new husband, along with vanity, probably induced her to lie about her age for the second time. The witnesses to Caroline and William's wedding were R. G. Gray and William Lloyd. The Reverend John Simmons performed the service in his home at 187 Elizabeth Street, Hobart.45
William Simmond's origins are still being investigated, and the surname variations alone present a considerable obstacle to identifying the correct person. There were at least fourteen William Simmonds, Simmons, and so on who arrived in Van Diemen's Land as convicts, and probably the same number of people arrived free. Simmonds has also been spelt as Simmons, Symmons, Simonds, Simons, Symons and Symonds.
William's will has assisted with his identification to some extent as it names Caroline as his wife, and also mentions a daughter Sarah Brittain, wife of James Brittain. Sarah Simmonds married James Brittain on 4 December 1860 in the Franklin district and they went on to have fourteen children.46 Sarah's birth date and mother's identity are yet to be found.
William Simmonds died on 18 April 1892 in Hobart at the reported age of 81, making his year of birth sometime ariound 1811. William died of Senile Decay, and Asthma. His last known address was Smith Street, Hobart, and his occupation was General Dealer. He was recorded as being born in England, and the event was registered by the undertaker Alex. Clark.47

Dear All,
I wonder whether anyone on the list can locate a birth for a SARAH SIMMONDS or any of it's variants, betweem 1840 (according to her marriage certificate: she married James Brittain in the Franklin district in 1860) and 1842, according to her death certificate. Maybe Sarah was christened under her mother's maiden name though her father remarried later as a widower. Sarah Brittain died at Garden Island Creek, 24 August 1924.
Still trying to identify her father WILLIAM SIMMONDS, who married Caroline Caspar, nee Underwood as a widower, 24 June 1899. Witnesses were: WILLIAM LLOYD and R.G. GRAY. William Simmonds died in Hobart at the Invalid Hospital in Hobart on 18 April 1892, at the age of 81.
Best wishes,
Carol Brill,
Melbourne.

William's will has assisted with his identification to some extent as it names Caroline as his wife, and also mentions a daughter Sarah Brittain, wife of James Brittain. Sarah Simmonds married James Brittain on 4 December 1860 in the Franklin district and they went on to have fourteen children.45 Sarah's birth date and mother's identity are yet to be found.
William Simmonds died on 18 April 1892 in Hobart at the reported age of 81, making his year of birth sometime around 1811. William died of Senile Decay, and Asthma. His last known address was Smith Street, Hobart*, and his occupation was General Dealer. He was recorded as being born in England, and his death was registered by the undertaker Alexander Clark.46 He left his last will and testament as follows:
“This is the last and only Will and Testament of me William Simmonds of Hobart in Tasmania Labourer. After payment of my funeral and testamentary expenses and debts I do hereby give devise and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah Brittain wife of James Brittain of Garden Island Creek in Tasmania the sum of fifty pounds now in the Hobart Savings Bank to my credit or any part of that sum which may be left remaining at the time of my death. And to my wife Caroline Simmonds I do hereby give bequeath and devise my household furniture and effects and all else of which I may be possessed and I do hereby appoint my daughter Sarah Brittain sole executrix of this my Last Will and Testament.”
William Simmonds signed his will on 5 March 1890, and his witnesses were William Alan, (though "Alan" may not be the correct surname, as the name is difficult to decipher), and Frederic Stone. After William's death on 8 April 1892, his will was proved thus:
“In the Supreme Court of Tasmania Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction.
Be it known unto all men by the presents that on the twenty first day of April one thousand eight hundred and ninety two the last Will and Testament of William Simmonds late of Hobart in Tasmania deceased who died at Hobart aforesaid on the eighth day of April one thousand eight hundred and ninety two (a true copy of which is hereunto ?adjoined/attached?) was exhibited and proved before this Honourable Court and the administration of all and singular the goods chattels rights credits and effects of the said deceased within the Island of Tasmania and the Dependencies thereof was and is thereby committed unto Sarah Brittain (wife of James Brittain of Garden Island Creek in Tasmania) a daughter of the said deceased….” 47
Probate was granted on 6 March 1892, when he left his daughter Sarah Brittain the "sum of Fifty Three Pounds."
Catherine Simmonds' death was officially registered as occurring on 25 September 1893. She died in New Town, and the cause of her death was recorded as senile decay.48 Her death was registered in the undertaker’s records as taking place a day earlier, on 24 September 1893, at the New Town Invalid Station:
Caroline Simmons. Died Invalid Station, New Town. Buried Cornelian Bay Cemetery Sept. 27th at 3pm. Rev. Plant [?] 1 Coach. Born England. Labourer's Wife. Age 70 Years. [Certified by] Doctor C. E. Barnard. [Cause of Death] Senility [and written across the record] Boucher Family.49
Both records give Caroline's place of birth as England, but this is probably due to Caroline's senility and her inability to provide the informant with accurate information on her birthplace. The fact that the Boucher family probably paid for Caroline's burial indicate that she was in the care of her sister Jane's family after William's death.
*Note that in the 1892 Tasmanian directory there is a William Simons of 17 Smith St Hobart.
