Sarah Simmonds was born on 13 Jul 1844 in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia to Henry Simmonds and Eliza Harper. She was baptised at Holy Trinity.

Immigration to New Zealand
Sarah must have arrived in New Zealand between 1862 and 1864.
She was witness to the marriage of her brother James Simmonds on 1 Oct 1864 at Esk St, Invercargill. Also witness at this marriage was her future husband, Edwin Villers Carter
Marriage and children
Sarah married Edwin Villers Carter on 11 Aug 1865 in New Zealand.[1] The following children are known:

Alice Henrietta Carter (NZ BDM Reg. 1871/22819)
Edwin Carter (NZ BDM Reg. 1873/39326)
Benjamin Richard Carter (NZ BDM Reg. 1875/4527)

Research notes
Her marriage document to William Charles Hird in 1895 appears to have completely inaccurate information for her, as does her obituary in 1942.
In fact, the 1942 obituary says she is aged 99 and came to New Zealand as an infant, and spent her early years in Invercargill. This is highly unlikely -- the first real European settlement in New Zealand started in the 1850s, and Invercargill was first settled in 1856.
