Biography
Margaret Simmons (or Simons) was born about 1835 in Manchester, Lancashire, England, the daughter or William Simmons and Johanna Guinen. After her parents died, Margaret and her two younger sisters, Agnes and Johanna, were sent to live with relatives in Ireland. [1] [2]On 29th November 1849, Margaret Simons (Simmons) was 14 years old when she arrived Sydney aboard the Lismoyne, one of 175 girls under the Earl Grey Irish Famine Orphan Scheme. The shipping record says Margaret, a needlewoman, could read and write, was Roman Catholic, and she was born Manchester, Lancashire, the daughter of William Simons (Simmons) and Johanna Guinen (both dead). [3] [4]
After a stay in the Hyde Barracks, Sydney, she was deployed to the Bathurst area.
On 16th May 1852, Margaret married John Smith at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Bathurst. Her address at that time was given as Campbell's River. There were no children from this marriage. [5]
In 1856, her sisters, Agnes & Johanna immigrated on the Vocalist, their passage being sponsored and paid for by Thomas Ranken, who was part of a well-established family in Bathurst. Margaret may have already worked for her after her arrival in the Colony.
On 25th April 1861, now widowed, Margaret married James Whiley in the same church as her first marriage: St Michael's, Bathurst. [6]
After their marriage they selected land at Boramel, near Condobolin, and produced nine children together: Isaac, Maria, Agnes, Emma, James, Henry, Percy, Grace Florence and Margaret. [7]
Margaret Whiley passed away on 21 February 1901. Her death was registered in the Sydney district, with her father indexed as Simmons and her mother as Johannah. [8]
Margaret was buried on 22 February 1901, in Rookwood Catholic Cemetery (Grave Mortuary 1, Row K, Plot 1654), at Rookwood, New South Wales. [10] [11]
